Sweet Jesus, I love The Shining. I watched it again this week, and it really must be the most beautiful horror movie. I first watched it when I was about 10 (I was going through a horror classics phase that left me moderately scarred but thoroughly addicted).
Watching it this time around, I found myself paying particular attention to the soundtrack. It's fucking spectacular, and - whether you find this more or less impressive - none of it was written for the film (except for possibly Wendy Carlos' piece). Supposedly a score was written, but Kubrick poo-pooed it and opted for some sweet 20th century hits. These are all composers who explored the creepiest nooks and crannies of modern composition, and they show up in many of Kubrick's other movies. I love them.
Gyorgy Ligeti
mmmmmmmmmmmmm Ligeti. Kubrick uses Lontano, but my favorite is probably Volumina for Organ. That is what you do with an organ.
Wendy Carlos
Formerly known as Walter, Wendy makes her appearance during those fabulously shitty opening credits (I love me some Dies Ire). I'm also a little addicted to Switched on Bach.
Bela Bartok
Bartok, Bartok, Bartok. His is clearly the most gorgeous work in this collection. And let me tell you something: this piece is symmetrical. Normally, I hate that shit. I don't care that the number of notes you used adds up to 42, or that it spells out "I <3 Bach" or makes a smiley face or whatever. But, as I said, this piece is first and foremost gorgeous. Then, when you look and listen a little more, you can see and hear that the whole thing (in addition to it's individual parts) unfolds then implodes. It strolls in, then exits right back through the door it came. Smart.
Krzysztof Penderecki
I have no idea how to say your first name, but you are such a creep, and I would do you for it. Penderecki not only wrote the creepiest music in The Shining, he also wrote what really must be the most terrifying and chilling piece in life. Just turn up the volume, turns off the lights, and try to listen without peeing your pants. I pee twice every time (once out of terror and once out of joy).
Love,
Brian Reignbow
